Barefoot Architects is an RIBA Chartered Practice with offices in Bristol and Devon. We offer contemporary design with a focus on social and environmental sustainablility.

The name ‘Barefoot’ derives from the principle of the 'Barefoot Doctors' of China who travelled between communities to provide essential medical services to people who did not readily have access to them. Similarly, our attitude and approach is to provide highly professional Architectural and Design services to a broad range of clients across the south of the UK, particularly those who are passionate about creating sustainable places for people and the planet.

The name Barefoot also has connotations for environmental sensitivity, and this is another key component to our ethos and work. Our first major built work of the practice was Chalk Wall House in Dorset. This remains a great example of our approach of using creative strategic design solutions to develop beautiful, customised sustainable architecture on difficult sites, where gaining a planning consent was far from straightforward.

Our current portfolio of projects demonstrates a wide range of interests, but with a focus on Homes, Housing and Community projects at all scales - from £100k to £10m - exciting extensions to one-off eco houses and larger scale housing schemes.

We welcome visitors,  but request that you call ahead to make sure we’re in and book a time slot! In the Bristol office, we have created a ‘Design Community’; a shared space for creative professionals to set up micro-studios.
